Sanjit Tayi:
A Tribute
By OZ Khan
(With so many teams in the Houston Cricket League and the introduction of new teams and players it is difficult to keep track of players who have been part of HCL for the past so many years. Houston Cougars Cricket club with the help of other clubs, will make an effort to highlight accomplishments of these players. This week, it's the turn of TCC batsman Sanjit Tayi)
I don't remember the exact year; it was either 2001 or 2002 when Sanjit Tayi first got involved in the workings of Houston Cricket as the official Secretary. That was when I was first introduced to the man though I am sure he had been playing in the league a year or so before then. He took to the role like fish to water and considering the fact he had big shoes to fill (he replaced Danish Rizvi who had been instrumental in that position over the years) few doubted his abilities after a period of 1-2 months. He was effective, very organized and brought a new sense of order and discipline to the world of Houston Cricket. He brought new ideas and was one of the few people who actually devoted time, energy and selfless commitment to take Houston Cricket League further. He has been instrumental in making Houston Tigers a branded club in HCL and also helped convert them into an organized, disciplined and efficient unit off the field. After Memorial CC, Houston Tigers were the only club to regularly and successfully hold a cricket tournament that attracted majority of the HCL members and provided entertainment, excitement and plenty of food and fun for all.
Sanjit has an amazing ability to multitask and you would find very few people around who can hold a regular job, devote hours on end to help run HCL in an important position, take care of organizational aspects of your own club, score quite a few runs on the cricket pitch after keeping for 40 overs and yet still find time to hang out with you at the bar for a beer. As in most cases, his tenure with the HCL Executive Committee was never without controversies and confrontations but the fact he helped us accomplish so much in a short while and acted as glue holding everything together during last few years completely overshadows those issues.
His loss is a big loss to any organization and Houston Cricket League will be losing one of its most prominent stars when next year the HCL Exec Committee and Triggers Cricket Club will not include Sanjit Tayi in their ranks. Farewell and Godspeed in your future endeavors, Sanjit, we all wish you the best.
